Indirect Question II
1. Indirect question ในกรณีที่ไม่มีคำแสดงคำถาม (what, who,…) เมื่อเพิ่มข้อความข้างหน้า do you know, tell me, …) จะต้องใช้ if เข้ามาเพื่อเป็นคำเชื่อมระหว่างข้อความนำกับประโยคในคำถามเดิม
Example: Direct: Is he hungry? เขาหิวไหม
Indirect: Ask him if he is hungry. ถามเขาว่าเขาหิวไหม
Direct: Does he teach English? เขาสอนภาษาอังกฤษหรือเปล่า
Indirect: Can you tell me if he teaches English.
*** สังเกต จะเห็นว่าไม่มี wh-word เลย แต่ขึ้นด้วยคำกริยาทั้งสิ้น
2. เราสามารถใช้ whether แทน if ในประโยคลักษณะนี้ได้เสมอ
Example: Indirect: Ask him if he is hungry.
ถามเขาว่าเขาหิวไหม
Indirect: Ask him whether he is hungry.
ถามเขาว่าเขาหิวไหม
*** หากกลัวสับสนกับ if ที่แปลว่า ถ้า ให้ใช้ whether แทนได้ ****
Exercise
จงเปลี่ยนเป็น Indirect question โดยชึ้นประโยคด้วย I don’t know, please tell me หรือ do you know
Example: Is he hungry? - Do you know if he is hungry? หรือ Tell me whether he is hungry.
