1.การใช้ will และ shall ใน indirect speech ต้องเปลี่ยนเป็นรูป past คือ would และ should
Example: Direct: He said, “It will rain next month.”
Indirect: He said it would rain the following month.
เขาบอกว่าฝนจะตกในเดือนหน้า
Direct: He said, “I shall think about it.”
Indirect: He said he would think about it.
เขาบอกว่าเขาจะคิดอีกทีหนึ่ง
2.การเปลี่ยนแปลง tense หากกริยานำเป็น present ในคำเล่าเปลี่ยนหรือไม่เปลี่ยนก็ได้ แต่หากกริยานำเป็น past กริยาในคำเล่าต้องเปลี่ยนเป็น past ด้วย
Example: Direct: He says, “I’ve been reading for two hours.”
Indirect: He says that he’s been reading for two hours.

3.การเปลี่ยนข้อความจาก direct เป็น indirect เปลี่ยนคำแสดงความใกล้เป็นคำไกล เช่น
Example: Direct: “This is the house where she lives,” he said
Indirect: He said (that) that was the house where she lived.
Direct: He said to me “I saw her here yesterday.”
Indirect: He told me that he had seen her there the day before.

Here เปลี่ยนเป็น there
Now เปลี่ยนเป็น then
Today เปลี่ยนเป็น that day
Tomorrow เปลี่ยนเป็น the next day (the following day)
Yesterday เปลี่ยนเป็น the day before (the previous day)
Last night (month, year) เปลี่ยนเป็น the night before
Ago เปลี่ยนเป็น before
This, these เปลี่ยนเป็น that, those
Come เปลี่ยนเป็น go
