the เรียกว่า definite article ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่ต้องการเจาะจงลงไปว่าเป็นสิ่งนั้นสิ่งนี้
หรือพอเข้าใจได้ว่าเป็นอันนั้นอันนี้
เช่น The
boy over there is the best at English. เด็กชายที่อยู่ตรงนั้นเก่งภาษาอังกฤษที่สุด
The big house on the corner belongs to
the mayor. บ้านหลังใหญ่ที่มุมถนนเป็นของนายกเทศมนตรี
The sun is slowly setting behind the
hill. ดวงอาทิตย์กำลังตกลับภูเขาไปอย่างช้า

ไม่ใช้ the
กับชื่อเฉพาะ
(ชื่อคน, วัน, เดือน, ประเทศ, ภาษา) ชื่อฤดูกาล และมื้ออาหาร
2.1 ชื่อครอบครัวใช้ the นำเสมอ เช่น The browns, the smiths
2.2 ชื่อภาษาจะใช้เป็น the English language (หาก the English จะหมายความถึงชาวอังกฤษ)
2.3 ชื่อเกมส์หรือกีฬาที่เล่น ไม่ต้องใช้
the นำหน้า
2.4 ชื่อเครื่องดนตรี เช่น the piano, the guitar, the flute
2.5 ชื่อเฉพาะทางภูมิศาสตร์
เราจะใช้ the กับชื่อทะเล มหาสมุทร แม่น้ำ คลอง
